That’s 1 in 100 children worldwide. Only 10% of these children have access to the specialized medical care they need to save their lives. The majority live in rural areas of poverty-stricken, developing countries where access to necessary medical care is limited at best. If medical care does exist, it is financially inaccessible. Without help, these children will die.
A congenital heart defect doesn’t just rob children of their ability to attend school or play freely; it traps families in a cycle of fear and sacrifice. Parents often find themselves unable to work, dedicating their lives to caring for a child who should be thriving, not suffering.
But access to corrective heart surgery changes everything. It transforms lives. Children who once faced a future of limitations are suddenly given the chance to grow, reach milestones, and embrace a world full of opportunities. With their health restored, they can experience childhood as it was meant to be—full of joy, learning, and play. Parents, too, regain a sense of hope and security. They can return to their jobs, knowing their child’s future is no longer clouded by illness.
With their health restored, children can fully live the childhood they deserve—filled with happiness, growth, and adventure.
Less time spent in hospitals and battling chronic illness means children can finally attend school and experience the education and growth they deserve.

When families are freed from the constant strain of caring for a sick child, they gain the precious time and energy to pursue meaningful work, build businesses, and truly connect with one another.

One million children are born each year with congenital heart defects. That’s 1 in 100 children worldwide. Most live in isolated rural areas with limited access to specialized medical care. These conditions keep children out of school, parents out of work, and left untreated, these heart defects result in shortened lifespans.
My own son was diagnosed with CHD at birth and underwent life-saving open-heart surgery when he was just four months old. I still remember the crushing fear of his diagnosis, followed by immense relief upon learning his life could be saved thanks to skilled surgeons and accessible care. As a mother, I can’t imagine the heartbreak of not having that hope. HeartGift provides this hope for families all over the world.
