Miradeau – Age 8 – Haiti
After a short lifetime of chronic illness and extensive hospital visits, Miradeau was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a combination of four different defects that change how blood flows through the heart. Children with this diagnosis are often called “blue babies” because of their blueish-tinged lips, skin, and nails caused by low oxygen levels in the blood. Unfortunately, the necessary life-saving medical treatment and expertise is not available in Haiti.
Despite extreme civil unrest, political instability, and economic insecurity, Miradeau – accompanied by his older adult brother, Laimond – left Port Au Prince and flew to Miami, then on to New Orleans for his life-saving surgery at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. Thanks to cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Timothy Pettitt, and his entire team, Miradeau has a newly mended heart and is feeling better with a lot more energy and larger appetite.
